How we are different
People often ask us how we differ from other cancer charities like Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Cancer Research UK carries out scientific research into new drugs and treatments for cancer. Thanks to treatments pioneered by Cancer Research UK, many people are living longer with cancer. That's where Macmillan comes in.
We're here to meet the practical, social and emotional needs of this growing population. As the scientists take forward their vital laboratory work, we're out in homes, hospitals and communities helping people with the day to day challenges of having cancer. We also are a force for change, listening to people affected by cancer and working together for better cancer care.
Macmillan and Marie Curie both offer expert care and support to people with cancer and their families. They both have specialist nurses as part of their teams. The main difference in the role of the nurses is the point at which they come into people's lives.
Macmillan nurses meet with people as soon as possible after a cancer diagnosis, and offer information, care and support for as long as it is needed. Marie Curie nurses specialise in care and support for people who are in the terminal stages of their illness.
