Help us cut the cost of parking at hospital

As part of our Better Deal campaign, Macmillan is calling for free parking at hospital for cancer patients. Some hospitals have already begun to offer free parking for cancer patients, but we know that there are still many more that don't.

Even if you have supported our campaign in the past, we still need your help to ensure that all hospitals across the UK follow good practice, so cancer patients no longer pay the price for hospital parking.

The actions take a few minutes and is a simple way to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

Wales leads the way…

The Welsh Assembly Government has scrapped car parking charges in all Welsh hospitals except where external contracts exist. Trusts with external contract will have to reduce parking fees, and will be required to propose and fund schemes to reduce costs until contracts expire or are ended. This is excellent news for thousands of Welsh cancer patients who no longer have to pay this unfair charge.

…and in Scotland

If you live in Scotland you don't don't need to take any action at the moment. In March 2007, following campaigning by Macmillan, the Scottish Executive issued strengthened guidance to NHS Boards in recommending that they offer free parking to cancer patients attending regular treatment. We are really pleased with this outcome and so far hospitals in Scotland appear to be following this guidance. We will be monitoring the situation closely and will be coming back to you to ask for help if needed.
