From Wineman to Ironman!
A 2.2 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and finally a 26.2 mile run. You would have to be an Ironman to take on this challenge!
As if these distances are not enough, Kevin O'Rourke from Castlethorpe is actually taking part in the legendary Ironman UK Triathlon as part of a triple challenge. He has already completed the Flora London Marathon back in April and the Milton Keynes Half Ironman in July this year.
Kevin is taking on this amazing challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, in honour of Dee Heymerdinger, who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year. Kevin describes Dee, who ironically worked as fundraising manager for Macmillan in Buckinghamshire, as a 'She-ro'. Kevin said despite suggestions of many worthwhile causes, the decision to support Macmillan was easy as he wanted to continue the great work Dee did for Macmillan.
Rebecca Staden, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan in Buckinghamshire, said:
'The challenge Kevin has set himself is absolutely amazing, but I'm sure his hard work will pay off. The money he raises will make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by cancer right here in Milton Keynes.'
Funds donated by Kevin's generous sponsors will be used to fund Macmillan health professionals based at the Macmillan Unit at Milton Keynes General Hospital.
Kevin describes the Ironman UK Triathlon, held in Sherbourne, Dorset, as the biggest challenge of his life, saying it is a 'terrifying prospect'. In addition, the rules of the race means he has to finish the gruelling course inside 17 hours to be an official finisher!
Kevin will be swimming, cycling and running in Dee's memory on Sunday 7 September. You can sponsor Kevin by visiting www.justgiving.com/wineman2ironman.
Go on, Kevin is doing all the hard work... all you have to do is dig deep!
