Mabel's great escape from cancer

After raising £750 together with The Magazine pub in Wallasey for Macmillan Cancer Support in May, Mabel Robinson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February of this year, is hoping to encourage others to get involved with and support the charity that she is grateful to for the support given to her throughout her cancer journey.

On 6 July handcuffed pairs will meet at HM Walton Prison, to embark on the ultimate adventure 'The Great Escape' to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support…and what a great way to acknowledge Mabel’s wish and get involved.

Mabel will never forget her journey. She said:

'When the diagnosis was given, both me and my husband were devastated and both went through the feeling of dying…my whole world crumbled. This is when Chris Taverner my Macmillan Breast Care Nurse from Clatterbridge Hospital became part of my life. Her calm and supportive manner was a great help to both of us…She was there after my diagnosis, beside my bed following surgery and in front of me always with a cheerful smile, and a way of making me feel like I was her only patient…Little did I know what an amazing role the Macmillan Nurses play in helping people following the diagnosis of cancer.'

Mabel hopes that lots of people register to take part in The Great Escape which will see blindfolded pairs put on to an Arriva bus and driven over 50 miles to a secret location where they will be dropped off. They will have to find their way back home to a welcome party at The Picture House, London Road in Liverpool with no map and no money.

Mabel said:

'I really do hope the event is a huge success and raises lots of money for you…Chris has helped me (and my husband) through a very difficult period in our lives. We both recognise there will be other times in the coming months or years when we will rely on her help and advice but we know that she will be there for us. I can’t stress enough the invaluable support that we received so if I can encourage any body to support this cause by getting involved with The Great Escape, I would be extremely happy!'

Arriva are supporting the event by providing two buses and drivers for free, Nick Gordon, Marketing Manager at Arriva North West and Wales said:

'Macmillan Cancer Support make a huge difference to many peoples' lives on Merseyside and we are only to pleased to be helping them in their fundraising efforts. Hopefully the event will be a bit of fun for all those that take part and will also help the charity continue its excellent work in the area.'

Aimee Scally, Comminuty Fundraiser for Wirral is extremely grateful to Mabel for her fundraising efforts and for sharing her story:

'One in three of us will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in our lives, and cancer incidence is set to triple by 2025. We really could not provide the medical, emotional, financial and practical support for people living with cancer without the invaluable support that Mabel has shown... participants of The Great Escape have to make their way back to the safe haven without spending any money or using their mobile phone, so if you're up for a challenge this is a great event to get involved in!'
