We are looking to establish a new fundraising group in the Wimborne area. If you would be interested in taking part in fundraising events such as coffee mornings or 'bric a brac' sales, race nights, fashion shows, quiz evenings and much, much more, or you may have a particular skills or gift that you feel could help Macmillan in some way then we would love to discuss how you could help. Contact the Dorset office and speak to Dawn or Chrissie 01747 821669 or email dhooper@macmillan.org.uk

A local cancer support group

2007 was another great year in Dorset and Macmillan Cancer Support is constantly delighted by the generosity of the local people and businesses. There are many ways in which they raise money for Macmillan, including joining in with UK-wide events such as the World's Biggest Coffee Morning and the Walk Wonders Challenge; running marathons for Macmillan; taking on personal challenges; undertaking street collections and organising local events such as fashion shows, nearly-new sales, head-shaves, sponsored events, dog shows and many more.

Macmillan Cancer Support is working in partnership with the NHS in Dorset to improve cancer treatment and care given to people with cancer and their families.

Macmillan is currently funding these new services in Dorset:

  • a Macmillan skin cancer nurse specialist at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals Trust
  • two part-time Macmillan welfare benefits officers working with the Citizens Advice Bureau, Poole, providing information, support and advice to help people deal with and understand the costs of cancer
  • a Macmillan oncology dietitian based at Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester, who will support people with cancer through their treatment, help them understand unusual diets and explain how diet can help them to remain well
  • a Macmillan part-time physiotherapist who will work with people whose cancer, or its treatment, has affected their mobility or strength.
  • two Macmillan GP facilitators who will work with their colleagues across the county to ensure that the care of people living with cancer at home is as good as it can be.

Dorset already has a team of nearly 35 Macmillan professionals, including specialist nurses, counsellors, social workers and information experts who are helping to improve the quality of care for people living with cancer and their families in the local community.
