A squirrel's tale (tail?) from Walk Wonders
Macmillan supporter Judith Tomsett took part in Walk Wonders to raise funds for Macmillan this May. Here, her furry friend tells us about the experience...
Judith and Squigg on the pier
Hello! My name is Squigg and I used to live on the Isle of Wight, so when I heard that my mistress Judith and her husband were going to walk from Fishbourne to Ryde it sounded like an exciting adventure too good to miss. So I stowed away in her backpack as I didn't want to miss out on the fun. However, I really ought to start from the beginning.
On 26th June at 7.30am (an early start - and I'm not used to that!) we left the house in the car to go to Lewes. We then travelled on two trains to Portsmouth Harbour, where my mistress met up with lots of her friends, but no-one knew about me, of course. We set off for the car ferry, but some folk took the wrong turning and almost got lost. Fortunately, they all made it to the ferry in time.
The crossing to Fishbourne was calm and only lasted about three-quarters of an hour, which was just as well as I am not a very good sailor. Once on the island we all walked along the coastal path past Quarr Abbey, where we stopped while some of the group took photos of the Benedictine Monastery. We then continued on through Binstead to Ryde Sailing Club and a stop for lunch.
At last, real fresh air, the backpack was opened and I was allowed to sit on top to have my photo taken, much to everyone's surprise. There were lots of boats sailing by and plenty for everyone to talk about. I had to be persuaded to go back in the backpack and off we went past the Golf Course and on into Ryde, which I remember so well. After tea and cake it was a walk up the pier to catch the SeaCat to Portsmouth, but not before I had my photo taken again, which I enjoyed even though it was very windy.
Just one thing - when we got to our lunch stop I noticed that my mistress Judith was the only one wearing a bright green T-shirt - not her colour really! - and that her friends kept giving her money, which seemed very odd, but apparently it was to help people living with cancer. I like the idea of doing something to help others. I think I might suggest we do something similar again next year.
Nut ta for now!
