Loretta Donato

‘Loretta is an invaluable asset,’ comments Verity Owers, London Community Fundraiser, about Volunteer Coordinator Loretta Donato.

‘Since last August, Loretta has helped us to develop our existing relationships with volunteers and recruit even more. She has also got involved in activities outside of her normal duties, including organising a coffee morning which raised around £1,400.’

Evidently a welcome addition to Macmillan, here Loretta talks about why she began volunteering for us, what her role entails and what she likes most about it.

‘I have always been a volunteer and had been looking for something new to do. I saw an advert for the position of Volunteer Coordinator and thought my skills suited the role. I also had cancer two years ago and had benefited from the help of a Macmillan counsellor. I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to give a little something back.

‘I come into the office around two to three times a week, and I do lots of different things. That’s because my position is a new one and is developing and changing all the time. But that’s what I really enjoy about it. There is always something new to learn.

‘One of my main concerns is that we don't lose individuals who express a desire to volunteer. I am trying to make contact and send out volunteer applications as soon as I hear of a possible volunteer. Our plans for the near future are for me to spend more time seeking out volunteers for specific roles.

‘I love being part of a young, vibrant team who value my experience. I also appreciate that volunteering at Hammersmith has opened my eyes to how much Macmillan has to offer. I had no idea about how much we do, and I am thankful that I can do my little bit to help.’
