More than 5800 people are diagnosed with cancer in Hampshire every year and they need treatment and support. Macmillan can help by providing:
Health specialists: People in Hampshire already benefit from 82 Macmillan professionals; Macmillan nurses, doctors, therapists and information providers, who are specialists in cancer care. They help people manage their symptoms and aim to make living with cancer easier.
Someone to talk to: Macmillan is there for people with cancer, their families and friends to talk, listen and understand what they are going through. Macmillan supports a network of self-help and support groups around the country.
Financial help: Having cancer can bring extra costs – hospital parking and travelling expenses, extra heating, different clothes. Macmillan can help – last year we gave over £106,461 in Macmillan grants to 305 people in Hampshire, to help with some of these costs. Macmillan believes no one should be financially deprived as a result of their illness.
Clear information: Having the right information about cancer at the right time is essential. The Macmillan CancerLine provides free information and emotional support for people living with cancer and now we have the Macmillan YouthLine, especially for people aged 12-21.
We need to raise at least £756,000 for the Hampshire Appeal this year to ensure among other services we can pay for:
-
A Macmillan nurse in Portsmouth looking after people with lymphoma, particularly teenagers and young adults
-
Two Macmillan nurses at North Hampshire Hospital Trust in Basingstoke, specialising in cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, bladder, kidney and prostate
-
Two Macmillan nurses at Southampton General Hospital, one looking after people with bladder, kidney and prostate cancer and the other making sure teenagers and young adults receive care tailored to their specific needs.
These Macmillan professionals will play a significant role in improving the lives of people with cancer.
If you would like to donate to the Hampshire Appeal, please contact us on the number above, or send a cheque made payable to Macmillan Cancer Support AS0513 to the address above.
