On 29th September 2007 Robin Brennan from set off for the Vietnam cycling challenge event with Macmillan Cancer Support. After months of training and fundraising for this epic journey, Robin returned from his trip and told us
"It seems as though I may have underestimated the challenge somewhat, as it was a lot more difficult than I expected! The terrain was far more mountainous than I had been led to believe, and there was the small matter of a typhoon to contend with! This rendered some of the roads virtually impassable, and the support vehicles were stranded on many occasions, leaving the group completely isolated.Cycling through mud is not the most pleasant of experiences, although the scenery was absolutely breathtaking."
"Accomodation was simple, some of which was old Russian army barracks that had been roughly converted into guest houses-some rooms came with their own wildlife,- frogs, geckos, cockroaches, and bed bugs!"
"I have cycled over 500miles, spent 55 hours in the saddle and climbed a total of over 33,500 vertical feet, some climbs being over 15 miles long. Hottest day riding was 108deg"
You may be wondering why Robin wanted to put himself through such a physical and mentally challenging journey, Robin told us,
"I am so proud to be part of a group that has raised over £189,000 and still counting. So the occasions when I finished my days ride and wanted to get a hot bath and clean clothes, but had to manage with a cold shower, and make the best of a bad situation, have all been worthwhile. It is only with your help that I have been able to help raise this amount of money, and must say a huge thankyou for your genorosity towards this worthwhile cause".
So far Robin has raised £3693.85.
