Fundraisers in Yorkshire break free for Macmillan
On Sunday 9 March teams of two boarded a totally blacked out coach outside Wakefield prison to be dropped at their destination 77 miles away – no one knew where they were going - only that they somehow had to find their way back!
The excitement mounted as the coach dropped it's prisoners off in sunny old Scarborough without any money…or the use of their mobile phones!
The day was fraught with perils and thrills with thoughts of 'how to get the best blag', being on everyone's minds. The outfits were ingenious with 'wanted' signs and prisoner's robes to get the most interest and raise the most funds. Handcuffed together with only their wit the jail breakers displayed brilliant skills. As teams arrived back, the pub was a buzz of stories and anecdotes of the journeys they took.
The end of the day provided a chance to congratulate all of the intrepid teams for making it back to base, with special thanks going to those who made the most bucks!
'Nobby and Big Ears' raised £1,260, so deserve huge thanks with prizes galore to fit the triumph! The best blaggers were indeed 'The Alcatraz Angels' from whom we had an earfull of stories and an eyefull of brassieres! The lazy stragglers, 'Dumb and Dumber' and 'Sister Act' missed all the congrats but pulled up in a limo so had the last laugh!
Tarts on Tour went home with smiles as they not only raised the 2nd most sponsorship but also took home the quiz prize! To say a big thanks for a wonderful day, Tarts on Tour have also donated some jewellery to help us raise more funds.
So as well as raising thousands of pounds the day was filled with fun for all. But what did our Jail Breakers really think?
When asked 'how did you get back?' we had random mix of responses:
'Tram, donkeys, life boat, bus and trains' – The 'Sex Kittens' and 'Bad Girls' told us!
'The Alcatraz Angels' had great time, they said – 'Well, where do we start? We called into pubs at Scarborough for money but we didn't spend any! Tried Scarborough police but no one was going out, but we did get more money. Blagged a free ride on a train and sold baggage space for £1. We sang a few songs and people paid us to stop! One man asked directions which we gave him for £1! We got off the train at Leeds and blagged a free coffee, then we went to a few pubs where we collected more money and got a free glass of wine! We then tried the transport police but they were understaffed so we got another free train ride where we collected more money. When we got to Wakefield we called in at another pub, collected even more money! We had a fab time!'
