Couple celebrates with the First Minister

A Turriff couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in style by throwing a party, attended by Alex Salmond, the First Minister of Scotland, along with close friends and family from the area.

Donald, 88, met Nancy, 86, when he was training troops in Canada, where Nancy was training to be a nurse after the war. They soon moved back to the North East and settled in Turriff.  Since then, Donald has worked in the local council and the pair have been famed for their bee-keeping skills; they used to own 200 hives!

Their youngest daughter, Nancy Lear, who organised the anniversary party, believes the couple are still strong after all these years because they worked hard together and were well prepared for life. Donald and Nancy have two grandchildren – Holly, who is training to be a doctor, and Alex, who is taking Business Studies.

The couple requested that donations were made to Macmillan Cancer Support at the party in lieu of gifts, because Donald has recently been diagnosed with cancer. However, according to his daughter this does not dampen his spirits. The couple raised over £1,600 at the party, which will be used in the local area to help people affected by cancer.
