Prison wardens cycle 200 Miles in two days

Four wardens from HMP Peterhead took on a huge and brave challenge of cycling 200 miles in two days in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The challenge saw the men cycle from Inverness to Fraserburgh and back.

Keen cyclists Chris Bain, Duncan McKenzie, Stevie Beattie and John Fraser, came up with the idea at work.

Chris said: 'I have cycled from Inverness to Fraserburgh before but I wanted to push myself and see if it would be possible to cycle there and back in the same day, but my colleagues thought this might be a bit too difficult so we compromised on completing it in two days.'

The wardens have donated to various cancer charities in the past, because cancer is an issue close to their hearts. Duncan’s wife is a cancer survivor and he feels that after raising money for research charities in the past it is time to support cancer care.

He said: 'Macmillan nurses do a fantastic job, I think the cancer support services are often forgotten about in lieu of research but we would like to help the people who make the disease a bit easier to cope with.’

Chris adds: ‘Cancer is something that has touched us all at some point, either with our friends or families.  We want to give something back to Macmillan so that the brilliant services can continue.’

The foursome hopes to raise £1000 from the event, which took place on 4 and 5 July.  Starting in Inverness, the team cycled in 25-mile blocks, stopping to take breaks in Forres, Fochabers, Banff and Fraserburgh. Supporters helped them on the way by collecting money at each break stop. Money is still coming in so the total raised has yet to be confirmed.
