Unlike previous years when the race had been blessed with quiet, calm conditions ideal for running, the competitors this year had to battle the 10kM route against more seasonable winter weather conditions for December.
An early lead was soon established by the eventual winner Steven McGuigan from Bristol AC who won in a time of 34.10, a good run in buffeting windy conditions but a long way short of the course record set by Richard Szade of 30.52 way back in 1999.
It is hoped that the 10th aniversary of the race next year will attract some top class runners who will have a crack at breaking that record!
Second home was Les Hewitson from Ingli Runners, an excellent supporter of this particular race, who finished in 36.05 just 18 seconds ahead of third placed Glyn Price from Sarn Helen.
Hot on Glyn's heels was Steven King from University of Wales Aberystwyth harriers.
The first lady to finish in a time of 38.10, and one of the last to enter on the day in a hurry, was the talented UWA harrier Phoebe Webster. Normally found running some of the hardest mountain races in Wales Phoebe made light work of the task ahead enjoying a winning margin of three and a half minutes ahead of her closest rival Shan Roberts of Ingli runners in 41.40. Melissa Davis from Trafford Park AC was in third place with a time of 41.58.
First man over 40 was Aberystwyth AC Paul Scullion running a great time of 38.27 leaving other class veteran runners in his wake.
The much coveted 'Dolphin Restaurant Trophy' which is a 'race within a race' for businesses and non-athletc clubs where a team of three fight it out for the honour of winning and holding the trophy for a year was won by the National Library of Wales. Team members being David Huw Michael, Wil Troughton and John Williams.
The first under 20 male home was the vastly improved Gethin Holland of Aberystwyth AC, the first under 20 lady was Gemma Hardcastle in a time of 62.17.
Next year's race will be held on Sunday 14th December 2008, same time, same course, better weather we hope!
Despite the weather conditions the race was considered a resounding success by Macmillan Cancer Nursing Care and raised much needed funds for their worthy cause.
