Volunteering

Thousands of volunteers dedicate time and energy to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. Macmillan was started by a volunteer and volunteers are still an integral part of the charity.

We promote Macmillan. Volunteers help to tell others about Macmillan’s activities, by giving talks in schools, to community groups, assisting at events and being ambassadors for the charity.

We fundraise. Improving cancer care in the UK takes money, so together we help raise it through committees, groups, individuals, our employers and local communities.

We help at events. Events don't just need people to take part. Volunteers help our events run smoothly and cheer on our marathon runners.

We give information and support. Volunteers provide information to visitors at Macmillan Information and Support Centres. Trained CancerLine operators (London only) provide people with information and emotional support.

We help in Macmillan offices. Some of us work in Macmillan offices using our professional skills, from answering the phone or helping with accounts to coordinating volunteer teams.

We help in Macmillan Information and Support Centres. Centres provide support, counselling, therapies and companionship for people living with cancer. Volunteers assist with some of those services including hairdressing and manicures, running the reception or chatting with patients. Those of us with appropriate qualifications offer complementary therapies and counselling.
