Educational maintainance allowance
This allowance is paid by Local Education Authorities to help young people aged 16 to 19 to stay in continuing further education. The amount paid is based on the income of the adults who are responsible for the young person. It won't affect any benefits they are claiming.

For pupils aged 16-18, apply to the Department of Employment and Learning. You can get a claim form from your school, college or local Social Security or Jobs and Benefits Office. You can also download a form from

For pupils aged 19 and over
Your local authority or college may also be able to help with the cost of travel to school or college. Contact them for more details. To find your local authority go to www.direct.gov.uk
In Northern Irleand
